The COO seat has narrowed to operators who can tie daily execution to margin, cash, and enterprise value. Your resume has to prove you ran the plan, not just wrote it.

CEOs and boards of directors screen for scaled P&L ownership, integration work after M&A, and a track record with Lean Six Sigma or OKRs across functions. Name the ERP, the head count you led, and the gross margin or working-capital lines you moved.

The examples below show how sitting COOs frame that scope, where an MBA or Lean Six Sigma Black Belt belongs, and how to write bullets a board will trust.

Why this resume works

  • Owns P&L across every major function: The summary and bullets make clear she owns revenue, delivery, and G&A rather than a single silo, which is what boards look for in a COO.
  • Revenue growth paired with margin discipline: Calling out recurring revenue growth alongside gross margin holding above 74% shows she can scale without breaking unit economics.
  • Fixed the leadership team problem: The attrition drop from roughly one in three to under one in ten is a concrete people result, not a soft claim about culture.

Why this resume works

  • Safety numbers a board will notice: Taking the recordable injury rate from 3.1 to 0.9 and closing the open federal safety citations is the kind of concrete record that matters in industrial COO searches.
  • Turnaround pattern shows up more than once: The Georgia plant fix and the four-worst-sites leadership changes tell the same story at different scales, which reads as a repeatable skill rather than a one-off win.
  • Cost savings tied to operating profit: Saying roughly 40% of the $62M program dropped to operating profit is the honest version of a cost-out claim and shows he understands what the CFO actually cares about.

PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY

Chief Operating Officer with 20 years across consumer subscription, marketplace, and direct-to-consumer brands. Have taken two companies from founder-led operations to durable, process-driven ones without losing product velocity. Owned revenue, supply chain, customer experience, technology, and people functions at different points; comfortable being the executive who translates the CEO’s strategy into a weekly operating rhythm the whole company can follow.

EXPERIENCE

Chief Operating Officer
Harbor Lane Goods | Denver, CO | 2021-Present

  • Report to founder-CEO; own operations, supply chain, customer experience, retail, and technology for a $285M direct-to-consumer home goods brand with 14 owned stores and 320 employees.
  • Grew revenue from $167M to $285M in three years while holding contribution margin above 31% through disciplined promo calendar and a full product assortment rationalization.
  • Cut fulfillment cost per order by $2.14 by moving from a single 3PL to a two-node network and renegotiating carrier contracts.
  • Rebuilt the customer experience org, brought Tier 1 support in-house, and moved customer satisfaction scores from 78 to 91 over 18 months.
  • Set up the operating cadence the company now runs on: weekly metrics review, monthly business review, quarterly planning tied to annual OKRs.

Senior Vice President, Operations
Threadmark Subscriptions | Austin, TX | 2016-2021

  • Ran operations, supply chain, and customer experience for a $190M subscription apparel company; scaled the team from 45 to 210.
  • Led the operational side of the Series D and later a $95M secondary; owned the KPI framework used in every board meeting.
  • Reduced churn about 380 basis points over two years through a rebuilt onboarding flow and a saves program that paid for itself in the first quarter.
  • Chaired the exec committee that made the call to sunset a men’s line that was diluting margin; the decision added roughly 5 points of company gross margin the following year.

Vice President, Supply Chain and Fulfillment
Mesa Rowan Brands | Portland, OR | 2012-2016

  • Built the supply chain function from scratch as the company grew from $28M to $140M in revenue.
  • Stood up two distribution centers (East and West), took ship time to customer from a 5-day average to under 2 days for 80% of orders.
  • Negotiated the first tier of overseas manufacturing partnerships, including on-the-ground QA in three factories.

Director, Business Operations
Quinlan Foods Co-op | Seattle, WA | 2008-2012

  • Ran the integration program for a five-store acquisition; hit the labor and shrink targets within two quarters.

Senior Manager, Strategy and Operations
Bellwether Consulting Partners | San Francisco, CA | 2005-2008

How to Write a Chief Operating Officer Resume

01 Open with what a CEO cannot find elsewhere

Lead with the one operating signal a CEO or board search cannot pull from a title alone. That might be a post-merger integration you owned across two continents. It might be a shift from services to SaaS you ran end to end.

It could be scaling headcount from 200 to 1,500 inside three years. It could be turning around a division that had missed plan for six straight quarters. Put that line at the very top of your summary, above tenure and degrees.

Boards read the first two lines and decide whether to keep going. A generic operator summary reads like every other resume in the stack and gets skimmed past.

02 Put real numbers on operating impact

A COO resume without numbers reads as a job description. Boards scan for scale first, then margin, then speed. Name the revenue you were responsible for, the headcount you led, and the countries or plants in scope.

In a second bullet, name the outcome: gross margin points gained, operating income lift, or cost per unit reduced. Show on-time delivery moved from one figure to another. A strong bullet pairs a scope number with a result number in the same line.

Cash conversion cycle, days sales outstanding, and safety incident rate all belong here when they moved. Round to clean figures the board can repeat in a meeting. Vague verbs like drove, spearheaded, and championed tend to read as filler without a number behind them.

03 Group your work into operating categories

Sort your bullets into three or four operating buckets so a board can read the shape of your job in one pass. Common groupings work: commercial operations, supply chain and manufacturing, technology and systems, and people and org design. Under commercial ops, cover sales operations, pricing, and customer success.

Under supply chain, cover procurement, plants, and distribution. Under systems, name the ERP, CRM, and planning stack you owned, such as SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Salesforce, or Workday. Under people, cover span of control, layers removed, and leadership hires you made.

Board and investor work, audit committee prep, and lender reporting deserve their own short block if you have done them. Keep each bucket to three or four bullets.

04 Place credentials and tools on page one

Boards want the credential and systems picture visible without scrolling. Put an MBA from an accredited university next to your name or in a short credentials line under the summary. Name the school and the year.

If you hold a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt from ASQ or IASSC, list it in the same line, since it signals operating rigor, not just theory. Add a short core systems line naming the ERP, CRM, and planning tools you used. Board and governance experience, including audit, comp, and nominating committee service, belongs in a short block near the top.

CEOs and boards of directors screen for these signals early, so burying them on page two tends to cost you a first read.

05 Cut what weakens a COO resume

At this level, less is more, and a third page rarely helps. Cut early-career bullets older than 15 years down to a title, company, and dates. Remove task lists that any director could claim: managed budgets, led teams, oversaw operations.

Drop soft-skill lines about being collaborative, strategic, or hands-on, since boards assume those and read past them. Cut logos of vendors and consultants you hired unless the engagement itself was the story. Trim your summary to four lines.

Two pages is the norm for a sitting or former COO, and a tight two pages beats a padded three. If a bullet has no number, no dollar figure, and no named system, ask whether it earns its space.

Most Popular Skills on Chief Operating Officer Resumes for 2026

Five years ago, a Chief Operating Officer resume read like a list of department oversight duties. The mix has shifted toward P&L ownership, margin work, and named systems like NetSuite or SAP. Titles alone no longer clear the scan.

CEOs and boards of directors treat hard skills as the filter and soft skills as the proof. They want to see supply chain or Lean Six Sigma in the keywords. They want change leadership shown in the bullets underneath a role.

Pull the tables against your target posting and keep the terms the posting uses. Back each soft skill with a bullet that carries a number. Swap in the phrasing the posting uses for your ERP or method.

Move any skill the posting names into your top five. Drop terms the posting never mentions, since parsers match strings and not intent.

Soft Skills AI-estimated %
Executive decision-making 67%
Board-level communication 64%
Composure under pressure 46%
Organizational alignment 37%
Strategic problem-solving 34%

And here are the top hard skills showing up most often.

Hard Skills AI-estimated %
P&L management 66%
Operational strategy execution 65%
Budget forecasting 48%
Cross-functional team leadership 39%
Performance metrics analysis 32%

Skill names and rankings come from an AI model grounded in U.S. Department of Labor occupation data for COOs, not from a count of COOs’ resumes built on ResumeTemplates.com.

Must Have on a Chief Operating Officer Resume

Before a chief operating officer resume gets a closer read, hiring teams check for a short list of essentials.

Niche Keywords for ATS Checkers

CEOs and boards want proof you have run the shop. That means named systems, real functions, and the money you moved. Pick terms from the parts of the business you actually led. Supply chain work covers plants, vendors, and freight. P&L work covers budgets, forecasts, and margin targets. Transformation work covers restructures, integrations, and system rollouts. People work covers headcount, span of control, and succession. Board work covers reporting cadence, risk, and audit. Match the terms to the scale you ran. A COO of a 200-person firm and a COO of a public company draw from different rows. Use the words your industry uses.

Niche Keywords ATS scans for
Operational Excellence Lean Six Sigma, Kaizen events, process mapping
Supply Chain S&OP cadence, vendor consolidation, inventory reduction
P&L Ownership margin growth, gross margin, working capital
M&A Integration post-close integration, synergy capture, Day 1 readiness
Governance and Risk internal controls, board reporting, risk framework

AI Skills to Add

CEOs and boards of directors are split on AI in the operating seat. Some want you piloting AI across supply chain, finance and service. Others worry about data leakage, model errors and unproven vendor claims. Name the tools you actually use in planning and reviews. Describe the workflow, including who reviews the output before it moves. Do not claim you run an AI-driven operation if your real work is scoping pilots and reading the numbers. Say which decisions still sit with you and your leadership team. That framing lands better than a tools dump, and it survives a reference call. Boards read the honest version as operating maturity.

What AI is actually changing for this role
Demand and supply planning

You review AI forecasts against sales input, then set the buy and staffing plan with your team.

Operating reviews

You use AI to summarize variance across sites, then walk the exceptions with function leaders in the room.

Vendor and contract diligence

You screen contracts and vendor risk with AI, then route flagged terms to legal and finance for sign-off.

Workforce planning

You model headcount, span of control and attrition scenarios, then reconcile them with HR before board review.

AI tools to name

  • Microsoft Copilot in Excel and Teams: Draft operating review decks, variance notes and meeting summaries you edit before sending.

  • ChatGPT Enterprise or Claude: Summarize long vendor contracts, board materials and policy drafts under your review.

How to phrase AI on your resume
Do
  • Name the tool, the workflow and the reviewer
  • Say which decisions still sit with you
Skip
  • AI-powered operations transformation leader
  • Leveraged AI to revolutionize the enterprise

Operations Leadership Credentials Worth Listing

Beyond the degree that got you into the executive ranks, the credentials below tell CEOs and boards of directors how you think about scale and how you run change. They signal the frame you use to cut cost, tighten cycle time and hold quality steady while the company grows. They also hint at the peers you learned from and the language you speak in a review. List the credential name, the issuing body and the year you earned it. Add the state or chapter only when the issuer expects it. Keep each line short and let the credential speak.

  • Master of Business Administration: Issued by an accredited university, this degree is the baseline most boards expect before they short-list a chief operating officer.
  • Lean Six Sigma Black Belt: Issued by ASQ or IASSC, this belt tells a CEO you can lead process redesign in operations, supply chain or service delivery.

Latest BLS Statistics for COOs

The Chief Operating Officer pay curve is one of the widest in the executive market. The top of the band sits far above the middle, and the bottom sits far below it. That spread shows the market pays for P&L scope, the size of the shop you run, and the change work you have led.

Years in a COO title and generalist breadth carry far less weight at the top of the band. The role has a mid-size head count. Each opening draws a deep field of inside and outside bidders.

Build the resume around the scale you own. Open with the operating results your CEO and board have already seen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I send a resume directly to a chief operating officer?

Yes, and a warm intro from a board member or investor works better than a cold send.

Address the note to the sitting COO or the CEO by name, and attach a one-page resume rather than a full deck. Lead the email with two operating results, not with your title history.

Should a COO resume be one page or two?

Two pages is the working standard for a sitting or aspiring COO with 15 or more years of operating work.

Use page one for the summary, current role, and two prior roles with numbers. Move older roles, board seats, and education to page two.

Is the title chief operations officer the same as chief operating officer?

Yes, boards and search firms treat the two titles as the same seat. Use whichever version your company uses on payroll, and keep it consistent across your resume and LinkedIn. Do not list both versions on the same resume as if they were separate jobs.

How do I show P&L ownership when I was not the CEO?

State the revenue and margin figures you owned directly, and name the business unit or region the number covers.

Boards read a scoped P&L as real ownership when the reporting line and the dollar range are both on the page. A vague claim of full P&L without a number reads as inflated.

How should I list private equity or board work on a COO resume?

Create a short section called Board and Advisory Roles below your operating history, and list each seat with company, tenure, and committee.

Note whether the seat was an independent director or an operating partner role for a private equity firm. Keep each entry to one line so page one can stay focused on operating results.

How do I handle an employment gap between executive roles?

Name the gap plainly and fill it with advisory work, board seats, or a fractional COO engagement rather than leaving blank months.

CEOs and boards of directors read an unexplained gap as a story you do not want to tell. A one-line entry for interim consulting reads far better than silence.

Do I need an MBA to be considered for a COO role?

No, operating results and scope carry more weight than the degree at this level.

An MBA helps when your background is deep in one function and you are moving into a broader operating seat. Put the degree and school on page two, and let the numbers on page one carry the case.

What resume template should a chief operating officer use?

For a chief operating officer, an ATS-friendly template is the safest pick, because it puts your certifications and experience where a hiring manager scans first. A basic template is a solid alternative. Whichever you choose, keep the formatting clean and easy to parse: clear section headings, a standard font, and no graphics a parser can choke on.
