Counselor hiring now leans on clean documentation habits and a clear clinical lens. Your resume should read like a case note: specific population, modality, setting. Name the therapeutic approaches, trauma-focused work, or motivational interviewing you have used.

Clinical directors and licensed clinical supervisors screen for licensure status, caseload size, and telehealth fluency. Name your state license, note your EHR, and show risk assessment and safety planning. Top pay in the field reaches about $97,590, per BLS data.

The examples below show how to frame outcomes without breaching client privacy. You will see how to place LPC, LMHC, or NCC credentials and structure your clinical history.

Counselor Resume Examples

Tip !

A licensure block placed above the experience section, caseload numbers that hold up across settings, and modalities that match the population being served are what separate the counselor resumes that advance past clinical directors from the rest.

Why this resume works

  • Caseload numbers a hiring clinic recognizes: Weekly client count and no-show rate are the two metrics outpatient directors actually track, and both are stated in real terms.
  • Backlog cleared with a specific fix: The 40-client intake backlog line names both the problem and the change made to solve it, not just a vague improvement.
  • Modalities matched to caseload: Cognitive behavioral therapy and trauma reprocessing appear in both the summary and the bullets, so training and actual practice line up instead of reading like a certificate list.

Associate / Provisional Counselor (pre-licensure) Example

This resume is for a pre-licensure counselor who works under supervision toward LPC or LMHC hours. It has to show clinical training, case load size, and clear steps toward a full license.

Associate / Provisional Counselor (pre-licensure) Example
PDF
DOCX
Use This Template

Why this resume works

  • Hours logged toward licensure: A specific number of supervised direct hours is the single most important data point for a pre-licensure hire and it is right there.
  • Supervisor visibility is built in: The same-day documentation bullet shows the candidate understands that pre-licensure work runs through a supervisor’s review cycle.
  • Practicum listed as real clinical work: The graduate internship reads like a job, with client counts and modalities, instead of a coursework footnote.

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC/LMHC) Example

This resume is for a fully licensed LPC or LMHC who carries a case load on their own. It has to show client outcomes, chart quality, and steady work with insurers and other providers.

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC/LMHC) Example
PDF
DOCX
Use This Template

Why this resume works

  • Two hard numbers, not a wall of them: Weekly session count and the drop in early termination are the metrics practice owners care about, and the rest of the resume stays qualitative.
  • Payer panels named specifically: Listing the actual insurers signals a counselor who is already credentialed and revenue-ready, which shortens onboarding.
  • Room to grow shown clearly: Precepting interns and consulting on risk cases hint at readiness for a supervisor track without overreaching.

Clinical Supervisor / Clinical Director Example

This resume is for a clinical supervisor or director who signs off on associate hours and sets program direction. It has to show staff load, program growth, staff retention, and audit-ready charts.

Clinical Supervisor / Clinical Director Example
PDF
DOCX
Use This Template

Why this resume works

  • Scope stated in the first line of the top job: Three sites, 34 clinicians, and 2,200 active clients tell a hiring board the size of shop this director has actually run.
  • Turnover and accreditation are the right metrics: For a clinical director role, retention and a clean accreditation cycle matter more than session counts, and both are named directly.
  • The career arc holds up: Counselor to supervisor to director, each rung with real work, so the senior title is earned rather than parachuted in.

How to Write a Counselor Resume

01 Open with a profile that names your clinical scope

Your profile belongs at the top of page one, and it should read as a scope statement. Name your years of clinical experience and your license status by state. State the setting where you have carried a caseload: community mental health, private practice, school-based, inpatient, or intensive outpatient.

Name the populations you treat, such as adults with mood disorders, adolescents, or couples. Name the two or three modalities you actually use in session, like cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior skills, or motivational interviewing. Clinical directors and licensed clinical supervisors read this block to decide whether your caseload matches their opening.

A profile that lists every population and every method reads as unfocused. Pick the scope you want to be hired for.

02 Quantify caseload, outcomes, and program reach

Bullets without a number tend to read as duties, so give each role a few figures a reader can picture. Name your weekly caseload size, the session volume you carry, and the no-show rate you hold your schedule to. Name intake volume if you run assessments, and the average length of treatment for your clients.

If you track standardized outcome measures, name the percentage of clients who reached clinically meaningful improvement. Program work carries its own numbers: group size, cohorts run per year, referral sources built. Where privacy blocks a hard figure, use scope language, such as “caseload of adolescents across three school sites.” Two clean metrics per role read stronger than five vague ones.

03 Group your work into clear clinical categories

A strong counselor resume sorts bullets so a reader sees the shape of your practice in one scan. Use three to five categories under each role. Direct clinical care covers intake, diagnosis, treatment planning, and individual, group, or family sessions.

Crisis work covers suicide and homicide risk assessment, safety planning, and mandated reporting. Care coordination covers referrals to psychiatry, case management with schools or courts, and warm handoffs to higher levels of care. Documentation covers progress notes, treatment plan reviews, and utilization review with insurers.

Program or supervisory work covers curriculum design, supervising associate counselors, and clinical training. Grouping this way keeps the resume from reading as a wall of session verbs.

04 Place credentials and EHR tools on page one

Clinical directors and licensed clinical supervisors screen for licensure before they read a single bullet, so put credentials in a page-one block under your name. List your Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) with the issuing state board, and note the state and “in good standing.” Do not publish the license number itself. Add your National Certified Counselor (NCC) credential from NBCC if you hold it.

List the EHR systems you have charted in, such as Epic, Cerner, SimplePractice, or TherapyNotes. Name the standardized assessment tools you routinely administer in your setting. Titles vary by state, so match the exact license title your target state uses on its board site.

05 Cut what no longer supports your clinical story

Senior counselor resumes get long because early roles never leave the page. Cut pre-license jobs unrelated to mental health once you pass five years post-license. Trim graduate practicum and internship bullets to one line each, and drop them entirely once you have three post-license roles.

Remove continuing education hours below the state minimum, since those read as maintenance, not distinction. Cut generic soft-skill lines like “strong rapport with clients,” which every counselor claims. Drop platform names for tools you used once.

Keep the credential block, the license line, the supervisory hours you have logged toward LPC or LMHC, and any specialty training a reader would recognize. Two pages is the ceiling.

Most Popular Skills on Counselor Resumes for 2026

Clinical directors and licensed clinical supervisors read dozens of counselor resumes a week for one opening. They scan for the modalities you practice and the populations you have treated. The names have to match the posting language, or the resume stalls in the queue.

Hard skills carry the first read because they map to caseload, billing and license scope. Soft skills like active listening and empathy matter, but only when a bullet shows them at work with a client outcome. Read the target posting, then mirror its exact phrasing for treatment approaches, assessment tools and documentation systems.

Pull two or three soft skills from the second table and back each one with a bullet lower on the page.

Soft Skills AI-estimated %
Empathetic listening 73%
Boundary maintenance 70%
Cultural sensitivity 40%
Collaborative care approach 36%
Composure under pressure 26%

And here are the top hard skills showing up most often.

Hard Skills AI-estimated %
Individual therapy sessions 72%
Crisis intervention 50%
Treatment plan development 39%
Psychosocial assessment 36%
Case management coordination 26%

Skill names and rankings come from an AI model grounded in U.S. Department of Labor occupation data for counselors, not from a count of counselors’ resumes built on ResumeTemplates.com.

Must Have on a Counselor Resume

Before a counselor resume gets a closer read, hiring teams check for a short list of essentials.

Niche Keywords for ATS Checkers

Clinical directors and licensed clinical supervisors scan for proof of scope. They want to see the population you treat and the settings you know. They also look for the session formats you run. A generic skills list will not carry that weight. Group your terms by sub-niche instead. Each row below covers one slice of counselor work. School terms sit apart from addiction terms for a reason. A reader in one setting may skip the other. Mirror the terms in the posting where they fit your record. Keep the credential letters as the boards write them. That signals you know the field, not just the words.

Niche Keywords ATS scans for
School counseling student support plans, small group counseling, crisis response
Substance use relapse prevention, group facilitation, intake screening
Clinical modalities individual therapy, group therapy, family sessions
Licensure and credentials LPC, LMHC, NCC
Documentation and compliance progress notes, treatment planning, records review

Counseling Credentials Worth Listing

A state license to practice counseling keeps you eligible for most clinical roles. The credentials below are what move a counselor resume from the qualified-but-typical stack into the shortlist that clinical directors and licensed clinical supervisors actually read. They signal your billing scope, your specialty depth, and the payer panels you can join on day one. List each one with its full name, the issuing body, the state where it applies, and the month and year it expires. Group them under a single Licenses and Certifications heading near the top of the resume, not buried at the end.

  • Licensed Professional Counselor: Issued by the State Board, this is the license most employers ask for before they will consider a clinical hire.

  • Licensed Mental Health Counselor: Issued by the State Board in states that use this title, it carries the same clinical scope as an LPC.

  • National Certified Counselor: Issued by NBCC, this credential signals a national standard and is often asked for by group practices and health systems.

Latest BLS Statistics for Counselors

About These Numbers

BLS retired SOC 21-1014 and reassigned this occupation to SOC 21-1018 in a later classification update. Figures below are for SOC 21-1018, the current code.

Top-paying states for counselors sit in rural and low-supply markets, not the coastal metros most job seekers picture. States with thin provider networks and reimbursement parity rules tend to pay above the coastal average. The national employment base is large, and the spread from the tenth percentile to the ninetieth is wide.

That gap shows the field pays for licensure, setting, and caseload, not for a job title. If you can work across state lines, put multi-state licensure, telehealth compact status, and rural work near the top of your resume. That reach is a paid signal, not a footnote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you call yourself an unlicensed counselor on a resume?

Use the exact title your state and employer allow, since unprotected use of counselor can violate practice acts in some states.

Safer titles include mental health intern, counselor-in-training, or associate counselor under supervision, with your supervisor named. Clinical directors and licensed clinical supervisors read title precision as a signal that you understand scope of practice.

How should you list a counselor license when it is only valid in one state?

Name the credential, the issuing state board, and the license status in the certifications section, such as LPC, Ohio Counselor Board, in good standing.

Add the states where you hold reciprocity or an active application, since portability varies by board. Do not print the license number on the resume itself.

How do you describe a crisis text line counselor role on a counseling resume?

Lead with the volume and clinical acuity you handled, such as 400 chat sessions with active suicidal ideation, safety plans, and warm handoffs to 988.

Name the platform, your training hours, and the supervision model, since clinical directors want to see the structure behind the volume. This work counts as supervised crisis experience on many license applications.

How do you put camp counselor work on a counseling resume without it looking thin?

Frame it as youth behavioral support and group facilitation, with the age range, group size, and any crisis or safeguarding responsibilities you carried.

Write it under experience if the counseling role is entry level, or move it to a summer roles block once you have licensed work. Quantify contact hours, since clinical supervisors read camp work as evidence of stamina with groups.

How do you show community service hours on an addiction counselor resume?

Create a community and advocacy block below experience, and list each site with the population served, hours completed, and the modality you used.

Name the referral partners, since drug court, sober living, and recovery community organizations are recognized settings for state board hour counts. Keep clinical hours separate from outreach hours, because state boards count them under different rules.

How do you list a school counselor license alongside a clinical counseling license?

List them as two separate lines, each with the issuing agency, the state, and the current status.

Order them by relevance to the posting, so a school posting reads school counselor credential first and a clinical posting reads LPC or LMHC first. Clinical directors and licensed clinical supervisors screen for the license that matches their setting before they read anything else.

Should a counselor resume run to a second page?

Use a second page once you have five years of clinical work, multiple licenses, or a publication and presentation record that will not fit on one page.

Keep the license line, current role, and clinical scope on page one, since clinical directors decide in the first screen whether to keep reading. Cut practicum detail once you have three years of licensed experience.

What resume template should a counselor use?

For a counselor, an ATS-friendly template is the safest pick, because it puts your certifications and experience where a hiring manager scans first. A basic template is a solid alternative. Whichever you choose, keep the formatting clean and easy to parse: clear section headings, a standard font, and no graphics a parser can choke on.
