A controller is hired on the strength of a clean close, not a long list of duties. The resumes that move forward name the ERP, the reporting stack, and the size of the books you own. Think NetSuite or SAP, a five-day close, and audit prep with a Big Four firm.

CFOs and VPs of finance scan for signs you can run the month-end and grow the team under you. Show the headcount you manage, the revenue you report on, and one system you brought in or cleaned up.

The examples below give you real phrasing for each level, from assistant controller to corporate controller.

Why this resume works

  • Fixed a slow close: Cutting close from 14 days to 6 is the single number a hiring VP of Finance most wants to see on a Controller resume.
  • Clean audit history: Two consecutive clean opinions with zero adjusting entries tells the reader the books actually hold up to outside scrutiny.
  • Real team leadership: Naming the team shape (2 senior, 3 staff, receivables lead, payables lead) and the number of people hired shows management scope without exaggeration.

Accounting Manager Example

At the accounting manager stage, your resume has to prove you own the monthly close and lead a small team. Show clean books, on-time reporting, and audit support that CFOs and VPs of finance can trust.

Why this resume works

  • Owns a real close: A day-7 close on a $60M business is a credible metric at the Accounting Manager level, not inflated.
  • Cleaned up recs: Going from 22 past-due reconciliations to 0 is exactly the kind of grind-it-out win that separates a manager from a senior.
  • Public plus industry: Three years in public followed by a promotion to manager in industry is the most common Accounting Manager path and reads as credible.

Assistant Controller Example

As an assistant controller, your resume has to show you run the close end to end and mentor staff accountants. Prove you handle technical accounting, tighten controls, and prepare reporting that CFOs and VPs of finance rely on.

Why this resume works

  • Handles the technical work: Purchase accounting memos on real acquisitions and a full lease rebuild show the technical range a Controller expects from a deputy.
  • Sponsor-backed context is clear: Naming the sponsor context, entity count, and audit firm gives a hiring Controller a fast read on scope.
  • Clean progression to deputy role: Big 4 audit senior to accounting manager to assistant controller is a clean progression without gaps.

Controller Example

At the controller level, your resume has to prove you own external reporting, audits, and the finance team. Show budgets, cash management, and system upgrades that give CFOs and VPs of finance a partner they can promote.

Why this resume works

  • Two Controller stints: Showing two separate Controller roles (one sponsor-backed consumer products, one venture-backed software) reassures the reader this is not a first-time seat.
  • Real close improvement: Cutting close from 12 to 5 days with the specific mechanism (FloQast, 42 templates retired, checklist owner) reads as true because the levers are named.
  • Lender and audit scope: Borrowing base, covenants, and a clean first-year audit with a new firm speak directly to what a CFO wants a Controller to own.

How to Write a Controller Resume

01 Open with the metric a CFO would use to size you up

The first line of your summary should carry a number a CFO reads as scope. Name the revenue you close books on, the size of the team you lead, and the entity count you consolidate. A finance leader scanning the top of the page wants to place you inside their org chart within six seconds.

Writing that you are a strategic finance leader tells them nothing about scale. Writing that you close books for a 180 million dollar SaaS parent with three subsidiaries and lead a team of seven tells them where you fit. Put the CPA, CMA or CGMA at the end of that same line.

Save narrative for the bullets underneath.

02 Quantify the close, the audit, and the team

Controller work is dense with numbers, and a bare duty line reads thin next to one anchored to a day count or dollar figure. Most strong resumes name close cadence, audit outcomes and team size on the first bullet of each role. Name the day count for your monthly close, and whether you cut it from prior state.

Name the revenue and entity count you consolidate. Name the audit result, clean opinion, zero material weaknesses, or a drop in adjusting entries. CFOs and VPs of finance scan for close speed and audit cleanliness first.

A bullet that reads managed month-end close reads as a duty. A bullet that reads closed a nine-day cycle down to five reads as a result.

03 Group the work into four accounting categories

Split your bullets under each role into four buckets so a reader can find what they need. The first is close and consolidation: monthly and quarterly close, intercompany, multi-entity roll-ups, and flux analysis. The second is technical accounting and reporting: revenue recognition, lease accounting, and preparation of financial statements.

The third is controls and audit: control narratives, control testing, external audit prep, and remediation of findings. The fourth is team and systems: staff you hired and developed, ERP migrations, and process automation. Grouping the bullets this way lets a CFO confirm technical depth in one pass.

It also keeps you from repeating the same close bullet across three roles.

04 Place credentials and ERPs on page one

Your CPA, CMA or CGMA belongs on page one, next to your name or inside a credentials strip under your summary. CFOs and VPs of finance treat the CPA as a filter for technical accounting roles, so burying it on page two costs you reads. State the license state and that it is in good standing, without publishing the license number.

Add a short systems line near the top that names your ERP, your consolidation tool and your reporting layer. NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Workday, Sage Intacct, Hyperion, OneStream, BlackLine and Adaptive are the names a finance leader scans for. Software fluency signals how fast you can be productive without a six-month ramp on their stack.

05 Cut staff accountant duties and soft claims

At the controller level, staff accountant duties dilute the page and push senior work below the fold. Cut journal entry preparation, bank reconciliations, payables and receivables processing, and expense report review. Keep those functions only as things you oversee or redesigned, not things you personally key in.

Cut soft claims like strong leader, detail oriented and team player, which take space without carrying evidence. Cut coursework and internships once you are past the eight-year mark. Cut any role older than 15 years unless it names a CFO title or a Big Four seat.

What stays is close ownership, audit results, technical accounting judgment, ERP builds and team growth. That is the shape a CFO expects a controller resume to take.

Most Popular Skills on Controller Resumes for 2026

Finance hiring is tight in 2026. CFOs and VPs of finance are running leaner books and the bar to clear a screen is higher. Check the job posting against both tables below before you touch your resume.

Hard skills prove you can close a month and stand up an audit without hand-holding. Soft skills like stakeholder communication decide whether you get the seat when two finalists both know the close. Run the posting through the hard-skill list first, then use the soft skills as the promise your bullets have to prove with numbers and named systems.

Keep the wording plain and the phrasing close to the posting. Screeners flag exact matches before a human ever reads the file. Rework your summary and top three bullets to carry the highest-weighted terms.

Save the rest for your skills block and job history.

Soft Skills AI-estimated %
Executive-level communication 73%
Cross-departmental collaboration 56%
Detail-oriented accuracy 45%
Staff mentorship 36%
Deadline management 35%

And here are the top hard skills showing up most often.

Hard Skills AI-estimated %
General ledger oversight 76%
Budget planning and forecasting 62%
Financial reporting 44%
Internal controls management 36%
Month-end close process 27%

Skill names and rankings come from an AI model grounded in U.S. Department of Labor occupation data for controllers, not from a count of controllers’ resumes built on ResumeTemplates.com.

Must Have on a Controller Resume

Before a controller resume gets a closer read, hiring teams check for a short list of essentials.

Niche Keywords for ATS Checkers

CFOs and VPs of finance scan for proof of technical range. They want to see the close, the reporting, and the controls named. Each row below covers a slice of controller work. The close group covers month-end and consolidation work across entities. Reporting covers external filings, board decks, and audit prep. Controls cover testing work and segregation of duties. Tax and treasury cover cash forecasting and sales tax filings. Systems name the ERP tools you own day to day. Put the terms your team already uses in each area. Match the words to the roles you have held. Skip any group that does not fit your record. Keep credentials in their trade form.

Niche Keywords ATS scans for
Close and Consolidation month-end close, intercompany eliminations, multi-entity consolidation
External Reporting financial statements, audit preparation, board reporting
Internal Controls control testing, policy documentation, segregation of duties
Tax and Treasury cash flow forecasting, sales tax filings, working capital management
ERP and Systems NetSuite, SAP, Oracle Hyperion

AI Skills to Add

What CFOs and VPs of finance expect on a Controller resume has shifted. A generic line about Excel automation now reads as thin for a senior finance seat. A named workflow that shows AI use inside the close, with human review at each step, reads as current and audit-ready. CFOs want to see which tool touched which task, and who signed off on the output before it reached the board deck. They also want to see that you kept controls intact. The list below names what to add, and where to place it on the page. Keep every claim tied to a task you actually own.

What AI is actually changing for this role
Month-end close

AI drafts flux commentary and variance narratives, and you review the logic before it reaches the CFO.

Reconciliations

Machine learning matches transactions across systems, and you clear the exceptions and sign off on the tie-out.

Board and lender reporting

Generative tools draft first-pass MD&A and covenant packages, and you edit for tone, accuracy and materiality.

Controls and audit prep

AI flags journal entries outside normal patterns, and you decide which items warrant a control test or memo.

AI tools to name

  • Microsoft Copilot in Excel: Draft variance commentary and pivot summaries against trial balance data you already own.
  • ChatGPT or Claude: Draft technical memos and policy language that you edit against the source standard.
How to phrase AI on your resume
Do
  • Name the tool and the task it touched
  • Say who reviews the output before it ships
Skip
  • AI-powered financial transformation leader
  • Leveraged AI to revolutionize the close

Financial Controls Credentials Worth Listing

Beyond the accounting degree most postings require, the credentials below tell CFOs and VPs of finance which parts of the controller role you can own on day one. A CPA signals you can sign off on audit work and technical accounting. A CMA or CGMA signals you lean toward planning, cost, and management reporting. Which of these matters most varies by company size, industry, and whether the books are audited. Public company and audit-heavy roles lean CPA. Private and manufacturing roles often value CMA or CGMA just as much. List the full credential name, the issuing body, and the year you earned it.

  • Certified Public Accountant: Licensed by state boards of accountancy and asked for on most controller roles at audited or public companies.

  • Certified Management Accountant: Issued by the IMA and valued for controller roles focused on cost, planning, and internal reporting.

  • Chartered Global Management Accountant: Issued by AICPA/CIMA and often listed for controller roles at global or multi-entity employers.

Latest BLS Statistics for Controllers

About These Numbers

The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not publish a wage code for Controller specifically. The numbers below are a proxy: the closest published match is Financial Managers (SOC 11-3031), so use them as an estimate for this role, not an exact figure.

For Controllers, the top-decile ceiling sits close to double the median wage, while the tenth-percentile floor lands well below it. That spread is wide, and the employment base is large across industries. The shape tells you the role is common at the entry tier and thins out at the senior end, where scope and specialty widen the gap.

Where a Controller sits inside that band tracks with credentials, the size of the books they close, the industry they report into, and the ERP they run. Read your own number against the cards and tables that follow. Then shape the resume to the tier above yours, and lead with the artifacts that CFOs and VPs of finance read first at that level.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a controller resume be?

Two pages is the norm once you have five or more years of accounting leadership behind you.

Use page one for your summary, credentials, ERP stack, and current role. Push older staff accountant and senior accountant roles to page two in shorter form.

How do I show domain controller or IT work without confusing a finance recruiter?

Do not. Finance controllers and Windows domain controllers are two different jobs, and mixing them buries your accounting story.

If you moved from IT into finance, keep the IT roles on page two under a short earlier career heading.

What should the summary at the top of a controller resume say?

Name your title, your CPA or CMA status, your industry, and the size of the books you own.

Follow with your close time and the size of the team you manage. Three lines is enough, and CFOs and VPs of finance read only the first two.

I am applying for my first controller role from an assistant controller seat. How do I frame that?

Show the pieces of the controller job you already run: the month-end close, the audit workpapers, a technical accounting memo, or a direct report or two.

Ask your controller to hand you one deliverable a CFO signs, and put it on the resume before you apply.

Do I need to list every ERP and accounting system I have touched?

List the ones you closed the books in, not the ones you saw on a demo.

NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Workday, Oracle, and SAP belong on page one if you owned the general ledger inside them. Note the module in a short line if you led an implementation or a migration.

How do I present controller experience if my last role was at a private company with no audit?

Say so, and name what you did instead: a review, a compilation, a bank covenant package, or a lender reporting pack.

CFOs and VPs of finance read a missing audit line as a red flag only when you leave it unexplained. One clause of context turns it into a fact about the company, not a gap in your work.

Should I list the public accounting firm I trained at even if it was ten years ago?

Yes, in one line under earlier experience.

Big Four and top regional firms carry weight with CFOs and VPs of finance long after you leave, because they signal the audit and technical accounting base you were trained on. Name the firm, the title you left at, and the years, and stop there.

What resume template should a controller use?

For a controller, an ATS-friendly template is the safest pick, because it puts your certifications and experience where a hiring manager scans first. A basic template is a solid alternative. Whichever you choose, keep the formatting clean and easy to parse: clear section headings, a standard font, and no graphics a parser can choke on.
