FBI hiring runs through a structured pipeline with Phase I testing, a panel interview, and a full background check. The FBI screens your application materials before inviting qualified applicants to Phase I testing. FBI applicant coordinators and hiring panels look for federal law enforcement experience, investigative case outcomes, and the ability to obtain a Top Secret SCI clearance.

The strongest FBI agent resumes lead with measurable results from cases you worked or led. Show arrest counts, conviction rates, or intelligence reports you produced. The examples below show you how to frame that proof on the page. To compare layouts before you start, browse our resume templates.

FBI applicant coordinators filter resumes by scanning the first page for federal investigative experience and measurable case outcomes, because those details show whether a candidate can run complex, multi-agency investigations.

Chain-of-custody steps that were consolidated from a longer process to a shorter one show what was removed and what stayed. A reviewing attorney sees a faster intake without a broken evidence trail. If you streamlined a procedure, name the steps you cut and what the process looks like now.

Security breaches that dropped after an access-control audit show a direct link between the review and the outcome. A field office director sees cause and effect in two numbers. State the old incident count, the new one, and the procedural change that made the difference.

Investigative steps placed right after the seizure amount let a supervisor trace the finding to the work that produced it. When you describe recovered assets, put the investigation steps next to the dollar figure so the connection is clear.

How to Write an FBI Agent Resume

01 Open with a profile naming your mission scope

State your years in law enforcement or federal service, including any prior military background. Name the mission area you know best, such as counterterrorism or cybercrime.

Then note the type of field office or task force you served in. Hiring panels scan this block first. A clear scope line tells them where you fit.

If you hold a Top Secret or TS/SCI clearance, state it here. Mention your language skills if you have them. Two or three lines are enough for the profile.

Each line should name a fact, not a trait. Cut words like “dynamic” or “passionate” and replace them with duties you performed.

02 Attach a number to every bullet

Federal hiring panels value measurable results. Most strong resumes pair each bullet with a quantifiable metric or a number. State the caseload you carried per quarter.

Note the dollar value of assets you helped seize or recover. If you led a squad, give its size. Report conviction rates or case closure percentages when you can.

A bullet that leaves out the figure tends to read as a duty. Even administrative support work can be quantified. You might count warrants drafted or interviews conducted per month.

Training hours delivered to local partners also work well. Pick the metric that shows your direct impact. Two numbers per bullet can crowd the line.

One clear figure per bullet is enough for most entries.

03 Group your work into mission categories

Sorting your bullets into clear groups helps reviewers read faster. Use categories that match real FBI work. Investigations is the first group, covering surveillance, evidence collection, and source development.

Intelligence is the second, covering threat assessments and classified briefings. A third group can cover interagency coordination. This includes joint task force operations with local or state agencies.

A fourth group fits if you trained new agents or led field exercises. Label each group with a short header on the resume so the structure shows range without forcing the reader to hunt through unorganized content. Keep three to five bullets under each header, and drop any bullet that repeats a point already covered in a previous category.

04 Place credentials where reviewers see them

Set up a credentials section near the top of page one. List your security clearance level and its status. Add your Physical Fitness Test scores if they are recent.

Include firearms qualifications and any polygraph status. FBI applicant coordinators and hiring panels need these facts before they read your work history. A buried clearance line can slow down the review considerably.

If you hold a state law enforcement certification, note it here too. Software skills belong in a separate tools line below credentials. Name the federal systems you have used, such as case management or intelligence databases.

Keep each entry to a few words. This section should be easy to scan in under 10 seconds.

05 Close with education and relevant training

Place your degree near the bottom of the resume. List the school name, degree type, and graduation year. FBI positions often call for a four-year degree at minimum.

If your major ties to a critical skill area, say so. Accounting, computer science, and foreign languages are common examples. Below education, add a training section.

Include any federal law enforcement academy you attended. List courses in crisis negotiation or advanced interview technique. Specialized schools run by partner agencies belong here as well.

Keep each entry on one line with the year completed. Drop training older than ten years unless it is rare. End the resume here so the strongest content stays on page one.

Most Popular Skills on FBI Agent Resumes for 2026

More FBI agent resumes now pass through automated filters before a person sees them. Law enforcement terms clear the first cut.

Threat assessment language decides whether the resume advances. FBI applicant coordinators and hiring panels weigh hard skills to confirm your training. They look for proof you can run cases.

They also check that you can handle evidence properly. Soft skills like critical thinking carry weight too. Panels score your teamwork and judgment during board reviews.

Scan each table and circle terms that appear in your target posting. Then add those terms to your bullet points with clear results. Use soft skills as proof inside each work entry.

Place the strongest match near the top of your skills section. Keep every term in the same form as the posting uses it.

Soft Skills AI-estimated %
Composure under pressure 70%
Ethical judgment 69%
Collaborative teamwork 41%
Keen attention to detail 36%
Discretion with sensitive information 32%

And here are the top hard skills showing up most often.

Hard Skills AI-estimated %
Criminal case investigation 67%
Surveillance operations 58%
Evidence collection 47%
Witness interrogation 38%
Investigative report writing 27%

Skill names and rankings come from an AI model grounded in U.S. Department of Labor occupation data for FBI agents, not from a count of FBI agents’ resumes built on ResumeTemplates.com.

Security Clearance Details on an FBI Agent Resume

A high-level clearance is standard for FBI agents. FBI hiring panels expect to see your level noted. State the clearance type but not its case number.

Add your clearance level in a short standalone line. Note whether the clearance is active or current. Include the date of your last investigation if known.

  • Active clearance level held, such as Secret
  • Single Scope Background Investigation completion year
  • Polygraph type completed, such as full scope
  • Interim clearance status if final is pending

Public Safety Credentials for Your FBI Agent Resume

FBI applicant coordinators review your credentials early. A missing item can end your candidacy. List each credential clearly in its own section.

  • State law enforcement certification with status noted
  • Firearms qualification score and date of record
  • Emergency vehicle operations course completion
  • First aid or tactical medical training certification

Latest BLS Statistics for FBI Agents

About These Numbers

The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not publish a wage code for FBI Agent specifically. The numbers below are a proxy: the closest published match is Detectives and Criminal Investigators (SOC 33-3021), so use them as an estimate for this role, not an exact figure.

BLS wage data covers all Detectives and Criminal Investigators, a broader group that includes FBI agents. The 10th-percentile floor sits roughly 41 percent below the median. The top-decile ceiling runs about 71 percent above it.

That wide spread means pay varies a lot across the field. FBI pay follows the General Schedule with locality add-ons, so where you serve matters a great deal. Your resume should match the tier you are targeting.

Lead with your investigative focus area and any field office or task force work that fits the posting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should an FBI agent resume be?

Keep your resume to one page unless you have more than 10 years of relevant experience. A second page works when you need space for military service or language proficiency. Advanced degrees that relate to the position also earn that extra room.

Should I include military experience on an FBI agent resume?

Yes, list military experience in its own section or inside your work history. FBI applicant coordinators value leadership roles, combat tours, and intelligence work. Translate military occupational titles into plain language so civilian reviewers follow your duties.

How do I show language skills on an FBI agent resume?

Create a separate language section and list each language with your proficiency level. State your tested rating or score so reviewers can verify your ability. If you speak a critical-need language, place this section high on the page.

Can I apply as an FBI agent with a non-criminal-justice degree?

Yes, the FBI hires from many academic backgrounds, not only criminal justice. Accounting, computer science, and foreign language degrees all fit common entry programs. List your degree and highlight coursework that connects to investigative analysis or financial crime.

How should I handle an employment gap on an FBI agent resume?

Address the gap with a one-line entry in your work history stating the reason. Military transition, graduate study, or family leave are all common and understood. FBI applicant coordinators review your full background, so honesty matters far more than concealment.

What action verbs work best on an FBI agent resume?

Use verbs that describe investigative and analytical work you performed yourself. Words like investigated, surveilled, and analyzed show direct involvement in outcomes. Avoid vague terms like assisted or helped because they hide your actual role.

Should I list physical fitness test scores on my resume?

Yes, include your Physical Fitness Test scores if they are strong. The FBI requires candidates to pass the PFT before entering the academy. Place them on a dedicated line under a qualifications or additional section near the page bottom.

What resume template should an FBI agent use?

An ATS-friendly template gives your clearance level and federal case work their own sections. You can also use a basic template.
